The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE)

With 85 professors and more than 840 graduate students, this department is buzzing with innovative research.

From human health and the environment to climate change and sustainable energy, the world is facing tremendous challenges. Our dynamic professors have outstanding international reputations for innovative research addressing these urgent issues. Under their supervision, you will work with a wide range of industrial sectors, including bioprocessing, biomedical, environmental, financial, health, resource extraction, and pulp and paper.

In the last few decades, we have witnessed exciting new discoveries and developments in almost every aspect of electrical and computer engineering, including microelectronics, computers, communication networks, photonics, alternative energy systems and many others. The fields of computers and communications are coalescing and leading to possibilities that are limited only by your imagination.

We are proud of the many awards, fellowships and other forms of recognition that members of our department have received. As a student, you will learn from faculty members that include three University Professors (the highest honour given by the University of Toronto), 34 IEEE Fellows, 8 Fellows of the Optical Society, 11 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, and numerous endowed Chairs and Canada Research Chairs.

Research areas

Master of Engineering

MEng

This program offers advanced professional training in eight fields of electrical and computer engineering. As a course-based degree, you can complete it in just one year of full-time study. The MEng is an excellent way to differentiate yourself in today’s competitive marketplace.

Length of Study: One year of full-time study. Extended full-time and part-time options are also available.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold the equivalent of a U of T four-year bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering, or a related field (e.g., computer science, mathematics, physics). Visit the ECE website for full admission requirements.

Domestic Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $15,521

International Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $71,567

Tuition amounts include incidental fees.

Domestic Deadline: Apply by May 31, 2025 (with two references) to start in September 2025 or January 2026.

International Deadlines:

  • Apply by March 31, 2025 (with two references) for a September 2025 start.
  • Apply by May 31, 2025 (with two references) for a January 2026 start.

Master of Applied Science

MASc

The MASc provides advanced study and research in a major field. This is a full-time program and requires the completion of courses and a research thesis. Many students pursue the MASc with a goal of ultimately studying at the doctoral level. As an MASc student, you will be eligible to receive annual support of $20,500, plus tuition and fees, for two years of study.

Length of Study: Two years of full-time study

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold the equivalent of a U of T four-year bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering, or a related field (e.g., computer science, mathematics, physics). You must also demonstrate significant potential for research. Visit the ECE website for full admission requirements.

Domestic Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $8,351

International Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $33,247

Tuition amounts include incidental fees.

Domestic & International Deadline: Apply by January 9, 2025 (with two references) to start in September 2025 or January 2026.

Doctor of Philosophy

PhD

The PhD is intended for exceptional individuals who wish to pursue a career in fundamental or applied research. You will complete courses, a field comprehensive examination and a research thesis. As a PhD student, you will be eligible to receive annual support of $40,000 for four years of study.

Length of Study: Four years of full-time study

Admission Requirements: The equivalent of a U of T MASc degree, with thesis, in electrical or computer engineering, or a related field (e.g., computer science, mathematics, physics). Visit the ECE website for full admission requirements.

Domestic Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $8,351

International Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $9,107

Tuition amounts include incidental fees.

Domestic & International Deadline: Apply by January 9, 2025 (with two references) to start in September 2025 or January 2026.

English Proficiency Requirements: A student with a degree from a non-exempt country must satisfy the English-language proficiency requirement at the time of application.
