Engineering practice today demands a breadth of skills: not only technical, but also an understanding of leadership, finance and business, management, entrepreneurship and innovation. Engineers often appreciate the importance of such skills only after they join the workforce.

The ELITE emphasis offers a plethora of knowledge in building skills desirable by employers including leadership, project management, finance and more. The first of its kind in Canada, the ELITE emphasis is targeted at engineers seeking to develop a more well-rounded skill set.

Students who complete the requirements of the emphasis will have it notated on their transcript.

My Chemical Engineering MEng and emphases prepared me for an emerging multi-disciplinary and global workplace, as global and complex crises arise. I found the ELITE emphasis useful in developing the InVEST initiative at U of T Engineering and in creating client value at Deloitte by assessing risks in technology implementations.

Adnan Sharif

After co-founding Lyrata Inc., I realized the importance of gaining professional engineering training to excel in my engineering-driven entrepreneurial career and manage an engineering-focused business effectively. This training includes mastering necessary engineering business management skills through the ELITE coursework (APS1049, APS1013, APS1028, and APS1016) and also mastering fundamental engineering principles through the ChemE MEng coursework (CHE1100, CHE1800, CHE1147, and many more).
