About MEng Co-op
U of T Engineering is introducing a new co-op opportunity for up to 80 students entering the MEng Extended Full-Time option in Fall 2026. Administered by the Engineering Career Centre and modelled after our successful Professional Experience Year Co-op program (PEY Co-op) for undergraduate engineering students, MEng Co-op leverages a network of employers across Canada and around the world to offer you the opportunity to gain professional experience, expand your network and earn a competitive salary.
The MEng Extended Full-Time Co-op is a two-year program, including the 8-month co-op work term. While MEng Co-op students are not on their work term, they will complete the normal MEng course requirements and may elect to pursue MEng emphases.
MEng Co-op work terms are:
- 8 months in length, from May to December 2027
- Paid (average monthly earnings of $5,000 CAD*)
- Open to domestic students and international students
- International students are required to secure a co-op work permit upon admission to the MEng Co-op program
- Open to students applying for the MEng Extended Full-Time option in the following six departments:
- Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry (ChemE)
- Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering (CivMin)
- Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE)
- Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE)
- The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE)
- U of T Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS)
Please note: As the MEng in the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the MEng Cities Engineering & Management (MEngCEM) programs already have four-month practicums, MEng Co-op is not an available option.

How MEng Co-op works (Fall 2026 start)
- Your MEng Co-op journey begins with a for-credit course in Fall 2026 called Navigating Engineering Workplaces (TEP1701), which you’ll take as part of your MEng course requirement. This mandatory course will prepare you for success in your co-op job search. TEP1701 can also count toward the ELITE emphasis.
- Starting in Fall 2026, you’ll work with an advisor at the Engineering Career Centre as you apply and interview for available co-op positions*.
- Your 8-month work term starts in Summer 2027 and extends into Fall 2027 (May to December 2027). During this time, you will gain full-time, professional, paid experience in your chosen field.
- After completing your work term, you’ll return to your MEng studies in Winter 2027 to complete your remaining program requirements. You will have both Winter 2027 and Summer 2028 terms to finish your remaining coursework.
- Visit the Money Matters section for details on MEng Co-op fees.
*Ultimately, co-op employers hire based on candidate suitability when filling posted positions. As such, co-op work terms are not guaranteed. Students who are not successful in securing a co-op work term will complete the rest of their program requirements as an MEng Extended Full-Time student.
