How I Went and Found Careers Beyond the Bench

April 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

  • Are you curious about career opportunities beyond the bench?
  • Want to network with alumni who have navigated going from the bench?

In this session with engineering alumni, you will learn strategies and the decision-making process that alumni engage in when going from the bench to beyond! You will have the opportunity to listen to each alumni’s key career stories and the factors that went into them going beyond the bench, followed by an opportunity to mingle in small breakout rooms.

You will:

  • Reflect on the role of parallel planning and career flexibility in navigating multiple spaces
  • Connect with engineering alumni who have navigated career transitions

Our featured panellists are:

  • Karyn Ho, Science Communications Lead, Vital Bio
  • Leo Zhu, Product Manager: AI/ML Recommendations & Platform, Bazaarvoice
  • Oluwatobi Edun, PMP®, SMC®, EIT, Digital Risk Consultant, Deloitte
  • Yasaman Delaviz, Educational/Curricular Development Specialist, York University

Kar

Karyn Ho, Science Communications Lead, Vital Bio

Dr. Karyn Ho is the Science Communications Lead at Vital Biosciences, where she works to shape how their innovations in point-of-care diagnostics are presented to the world. She is an engineer and medical illustrator, and she used her unique skill set to forge a career that sits at the interface between science, engineering, medicine, communication, and art. By translating knowledge into narratives, her mission is to captivate people, spark their curiosity, and motivate them to share what they learned.

Leo Zhu, Product Manager: AI/ML Recommendations & Platform, Bazaarvoice

Product Manager with 3 YOE currently at the intersection of AI/ML and Behavioral Psychology, working on Recommendations and the API/SDK/Platform that delivers them. Previously worked on a cloud/mobile app for automating workflows, and kicked off a Pre-Medical Tutoring Platform. Holds a Masters in building Genome-Integrated Mathematical Models for Predicting Drug Metabolism, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and am a Project Management Professional. Originally studied Chemical Engineering with a Pre-Med focus, but realized that helping 400+ students get into medical school was more impactful than practicing medicine.
