Determine which graduate degree is right for you
As a starting point, below is a summary of the major differences between our professional-stream and research-stream degree program offerings.
| Professional Stream | Research Stream | |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | Master of Engineering (MEng) | Master of Applied Science (MASc); Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) |
| Candidates | Interested in a practical approach to graduate studies to advance their career in industry or pivot to a new field | Motivated by advanced research and academic collaboration; gateway to diverse careers including academia, government and industry |
| Program focus | Course-based with specialization through MEng Emphases. Many students pursue a faculty-supervised project and/or gain professional experience through an optional co-op or practicum. | Research-intensive training in a laboratory setting under the guidance of a supervisor. MASc is often a stepping stone to a PhD. |
| Supervisor | Not required | Required |
| Length | 1 year full-time, 2 years extended full-time or 3 years part-time | 2 years for MASc; 4 years for PhD (5 years for direct entry PhD) |
| Funding | Self-funded | Research funding available (via academic units) |
You can also explore our collaborative research-stream programs below:
Collaborative Specialization in Neuromodulation introduces MASc and PhD students to the clinical and engineering aspects of neuromodulation.
Collaborative Specialization in Robotics brings together MASc and PhD students from engineering, computer science and medicine interested in advancing robotics.
Collaborative Specialization in Engineering Education is for MASc and PhD students interested in engineering education research.
Collaborative Specialization in Psychology, Psychiatry and Engineering is for MASc and PhD students interested in intersection of psychology, psychiatry and engineering.
Review admission requirements, application processes and deadlines
Once you’ve decided which degree program aligns best with your goals and which department(s) you’d like to apply to, please ensure you meet the minimum admission requirements, including English proficiency.
Admission within U of T Engineering is administered at the departmental level. Use the links below to explore the admission process for each of our academic units and degree types.
Please note:
- Each department has their own admission requirements (e.g., minimum GPAs vary between departments) and processes (e.g., some departments have their own forms).
- Application deadlines (i.e., the deadline by which all your documents must be received) vary between programs and departments. A summary of deadlines is presented below, but please consult department sites for details.
Prepare your application
We recommend starting the process well ahead of the deadline in case you have questions or need to gather additional documentation to complete your application. Before you begin, make sure you have all the required documents ready, including references as needed.
Now you’re ready to complete the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) online application. The SGS application fee is $130 CAD and payment can be made online using Visa or Mastercard. In this online application, you will select your degree program and department of interest. Through this system, you will also upload any required documents, such as transcripts, contact information for references and any statements that may be needed.
Please note:
- If you’re applying to more than one program or more than one department, you’ll need to submit separate applications.
- Some departments have their own application forms or interviews that must be completed as part of the admission process. Details can be found on department sites.
