About MEng Co-op
U of T Engineering offers a limited-enrolment co-op opportunity for students entering the MEng Extended Full-Time option in Fall 2027. Administered by the Engineering Career Centre and modelled after our successful Professional Experience Year Co-op program (PEY Co-op) for undergraduate engineering students, MEng Co-op leverages a network of employers across Canada and around the world to offer you the opportunity to gain professional experience, expand your network and earn a competitive salary.
The MEng Extended Full-Time Co-op is a limited-enrolment, two-year program, including an 8-month paid co-op work term. While MEng Co-op students are not on their work term, they will complete the normal MEng course requirements and may elect to pursue an MEng emphases.
MEng Co-op work terms are:
- 8 months in length, from May to December 2028
- Paid (average monthly earnings of $5,000 CAD*)
- Open to domestic students and international students
- International students are required to secure a co-op work permit upon admission to the MEng Co-op program
- As of April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer require a separate co-op work permit for a mandatory student work term. Students must meet the applicable study-permit and program requirements.
- Open to students applying for the MEng Extended Full-Time option in the following six departments:
- Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry (ChemE)
- Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering (CivMin)
- Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE)
- Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE)
- The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE)
- U of T Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS)
Please note: As the MEng in the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the MEng Cities Engineering & Management (MEngCEM) programs already have four-month practicums, MEng Co-op is not an available option.

How MEng Co-op works (Fall 2027 start)
- Your MEng Co-op journey begins with a for-credit course in Fall 2027 called Navigating Engineering Workplaces (TEP1701), which you’ll take as part of your MEng course requirement. This mandatory course will prepare you for success in your co-op job search. TEP1701 can also count toward the ELITE emphasis.
- Starting in Fall 2027, you’ll work with an advisor at the Engineering Career Centre as you apply and interview for available co-op positions*.
- Your 8-month work term starts in Summer 2028 and extends into Fall 2028 (May to December 2028). During this time, you will gain full-time, professional, paid experience in your chosen field.
- After completing your work term, you’ll return to your MEng studies in Winter 2029 to complete your remaining program requirements. You will have both Winter 2029 and Summer 2029 terms to finish your remaining coursework.
- Visit the Money Matters section for details on MEng Co-op fees.
*Ultimately, co-op employers hire based on candidate suitability when filling posted positions. As such, co-op work terms are not guaranteed. Students who are not successful in securing a co-op work term will complete the rest of their program requirements as an MEng Extended Full-Time student.

Support every step of the way
Throughout the MEng Co-op experience, you will receive personalized support from the Engineering Career Centre (ECC), which engages with more than 650 active employers annually, providing students with access to a broad network of professional opportunities. You will be assigned a designated MEng Co-op Officer, who will provide you with:
- One-on-one career advising
- Resume and cover letter review
- Mock interviews and interview preparation
- Job search strategy input and coaching
- Ongoing support during your work term, with mid-term and final check-ins
- Assistance navigating the workplace
You’ll also benefit from a tailored job search. At the start of the MEng Co-op program, you will complete a form indicating your career interests, preferred industries and target job roles. The MEng Co-op Officer uses this information to understand your objectives
and works with employers to identify co-op opportunities that best align with your interests whenever possible.
As an MEng Co-op student, you’ll also have access to an exclusive job board, employer information sessions, industry networking events and tours, career fairs and workshops.
"I had never worked in Canada before, so the opportunity to get a taste of workplace culture here drew me to the MEng Co-op program.
The guidance and insights I gained from professors, guest lecturers and staff at the Engineering Career Centre helped me clarify the types of roles and companies that matched my interests. As a result, I secured a co-op position in my field of interest that I truly enjoy.
The blend of practical experience, networking opportunities, professional development and support helps me feel prepared for the next phase of my career.”
