Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME)
The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Toronto is a multidisciplinary research community where investigators from engineering, medicine and dentistry collaborate to find innovative solutions for the most pressing health-care challenges in the world.
Located in the heart of Canada’s largest health-care research network, we offer three graduate degrees to more than 350 students who receive training in biomedical and clinical engineering from more than 100 faculty members across numerous academic partners and hospitals.
We address some of the most critical challenges in health care. Our research and educational initiatives have lead to our involvement with more than 20 active startup companies and integration with three major biomedical engineering commercialization ventures.
Department at a glance
- PhD candidates account for half of BME’s population of 350+ students.
- BME is a key part of Medicine by Design (MbD), U of T’s $114-million regenerative medicine initiative. MbD brings together together 100+ investigators from U of T and its partner hospitals to enhance fundamental discoveries and develop new therapies to treat degenerative diseases.
- Five BME professors are at the heart of cardiovascular disease research in Canada. Led by Professor Craig Simmons, the Translational Biology & Engineering Program serves as U of T’s component of the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, which aims to address heart failure across the lifespan.
- The MEng programs include internships. Students work at hospitals, health-care technology companies and partner organizations in Canada and around the world.
- BME is one of the oldest biomedical units established in North America.
- BME is home to graduate students located across the U of T campus, as well as the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, Holland Bloorview Children’s Hospital and various other collaborating hospitals and institutions.
- Hosts 42 core and 68 affiliated faculty members.

Master of Engineering
MEng
The MEng in Biomedical Engineering program focuses on the design and commercialization of biomedical devices. Students have the opportunity to take on applied design challenges and meet the growing demands of this industry through coursework and a four-month internship.
Length of Study: One year of full-time study
Admission Requirements: A four-year undergraduate degree in engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution, as well as good standing in the final two years of study. MEng applicants are encouraged to have a minor in biomedical engineering or equivalent.
Domestic Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $15,521
International Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $71,567

Master of Applied Science
MASc
The MASc in Biomedical Engineering is a research-focused program that immerses students in the application of biomedical sciences and engineering principles to advance solutions for challenges in human health. MASc students are guaranteed funding for two years plus tuition and fees. Candidates in this program may transfer to a PhD during their first year of study.
Length of Study: Two years of full-time study
Admission Requirements: A four-year undergraduate degree in engineering, medicine, dentistry, physical or biological sciences from an accredited institution with a good standing in the final two years of study. Securing a faculty supervisor is also required.
Domestic Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $8,351
Domestic Stipend: $25,000/year
International Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $33,247
International Stipend: $43,000/year

Doctor of Philosophy
PhD
The PhD in Biomedical Engineering is a research-intensive program that immerses students in the application of biomedical sciences and engineering principles to advance solutions for challenges in human health. Students can be directly admitted into the PhD program. Direct-entry PhD students are guaranteed five years of funding plus tuition and fees. PhD students entering from a completed master’s program are guaranteed four years of funding plus tuition and fees.
Length of Study: Five years of full-time study
Admission Requirements: A four-year undergraduate degree in engineering, medicine, dentistry, physical or biological sciences from an accredited institution, as well as good standing in the final two years of study. Securing a faculty supervisor is also required.
Domestic Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $8,351
Domestic Stipend: $26,500/year
International Tuition (2024–2025, full-time): $9,107
International Stipend: $27,000/year

English Proficiency Requirements: There is a minimum English proficiency requirement for all applicants educated outside Canada whose primary language is not English. It is a requirement of admission and should be met before applying for admission. Please review the School of Graduate Studies English-language proficiency testing requirements to determine whether you are required to take a test and for a list of accepted tests and their minimum required scores.
